It is funny (and kind of sad!) that one of the most common questions asked of gynecologists is whether or not the mother will get stretch marks. Stretch marks seem to be almost guaranteed with most pregnancies, but there are ways to avoid them. There are, however, few ways to erase stretch marks after they have already occurred. So, if you can prevent them, it is best to do so!Stretch marks occur in the dermis level of the skin, which is just below the level that you can see and touch. Sometimes, especially during pregnancy, this level grows too quickly and all of the cells can’t keep up with the growth. The cells that are usually very elastic simply break under the pressure of growth and ridges and discoloration occur. These stretch marks occur not just in pregnancy, but in times of fat gain and loss, muscle growth, or even when a teen begins to rapidly grow. The most common types of stretch marks happen when men build muscle. Because it happens so fast, due to weightlifting or athletic pursuits, stretch marks occur. Especially in people with darker skin, they are very apparent. The truth is that you can’t ever erase stretch marks. You can make them slightly less visible. You can make them less noticeable to the touch, but because you actually damaged the construction of the dermis cells, you can’t fix it with lotions or creams. There are some new techniques which involve laser surgery to erase stretch marks. The same type of laser surgery that is used to remove hair from unwanted areas or even to correct eyesight problems can now be used to diminish the appearance of stretch marks. This is an expensive way to treat the problem, and one that can cause its own set of symptoms. Laser surgery is not fool-proof and there are plenty of cases of people who suffered serious skin damage due to the misuse of the technology. With most human maladies, the best way to deal with them is to avoid them. If you can avoid stretch marks, you will never have to treat them – and there are ways to do this! The use of moisturizers, Vitamin D oils, and anything that can keep your skin from stretching in the first place will help prevent the depressions, the markings, and ultimately, the scarring that is the result of stretch marks.
