If you have been to the dermatologist lately, your doctor may have told you that you have striated skin. What does “striated” mean? Although the term is usually used in other scientific areas, striated really just means “striped”.  When rocks are striated, it means that they appear in parallel grooves, cut by glaciers. Skin that looks like this is commonly referred to as being ridden with stretch marks.Stretch marks occur in all types of people and have since time began. They are nothing new and nothing caused by external forces. Some people get stretch marks and some people don’t. Women get them. Men get them. There are even young children with stretch marks. They are nothing to be ashamed of or embarrassed by because they are just a reaction of your body to some force within. In normal circumstances, stretch marks are caused by a part of your body getting bigger. When a woman becomes pregnant, a lot of her body starts to grow at an unusually rapid rate. This rapid body growth is hard on the skin as it struggles to keep up with the pace. In most cases, the skin cannot keep up and it is forced to stretch, losing skin cells along the way. This is how stretch marks are caused. When a person gains a lot of weight for other reasons, stretch marks can appear, and they can appear anywhere, though usually on the inner thighs, buttocks, breasts, abdominal region, and upper arms – all areas where there are large fat deposits. Men, in particular, get stretch marks because of muscle growth. When a young man begins to build muscle through weight training, the growth in muscle size can exceed the skin’s ability to stretch and stretch marks appear. The commonly accepted way to treat stretch marks is through the use of lotions, oils, creams, and other topical solutions. By moisturizing the skin, it is believed that the striated ridges in the skin will heal. This doesn’t necessarily happen because those ridges are deep, beneath the epidermis. Located in the dermis, they do not “fill in” as people suspect, but the discoloration can be treated through the use of certain lotions. Many people are choosing to use laser treatments to address stretch mark issues. These treatments can help, though no one who has stretch marks will ever see their skin back to its original state. Stretch marks are permanent and the best you can do is reduce their appearance.
