I had never really noticed my stretch marks until I met an old friend for coffee recently. She hadn’t seen me in a long time, and as I walked up in my new pair of shorts, I could see the look on her face as she witnessed what I had not – stretch marks across my inner thighs. “What happened to your legs,” she asked, “and when did this happen?”
Well, I had no idea when it happened. I had never seen them, but as I looked down I saw what she did – light-colored ridges, horizontally stretching across my inner thighs. They must have happened in the past few years. But, I had never had babies, so it wasn’t from pregnancy, and I hadn’t gained for than a few pounds since I graduated from high school. The truth is that there are plenty of people who get stretch marks through no fault of their own. It can happen, like it did with me, if you gain a lot of muscle. I had taken up running and my skinny little legs had gotten muscular. After an injury, I quit running for awhile and my legs had shrunk back down to their normal size. It seems that the expansion and contraction of the leg beneath the skin had stretched it so that stretch marks appeared.Of course, most people think only pregnant women get stretch marks, but it isn’t true. Athletes get them when their muscles go quickly, and obese people get them after they have lost weight. The trick is to find a stretch marks remedy that really works. The most known type of stretch marks remedy is cocoa butter. Some people will tell you that it works, but medically speaking, it is totally unproven. It does moisturize the skin and can make the stretch marks slightly less visible, but in reality, it is not able to heal the damage that has been done. The newest type of stretch marks remedy is laser treatment. Much like the lasers that are used to remove hair these days, stretch marks can be shot with a laser and become much less visible to the eye and less noticeable to the touch. It can cost a lot to get stretch marks treated in this way, but for people with a lot of them, it might be worth it! Remember, though, that most stretch marks can never be completely removed.
